FIFA World Cup 2026 for Beginners: Everything a First-Time Viewer Needs to Know
Never watched a World Cup before? You are in the right place. The 2026 tournament is a perfect entry point for new fans. Games are on US soil, in normal viewing times, with the American team playing a real role. Here is everything you need to start watching.
WHAT IS THE WORLD CUP
The FIFA World Cup 2026 for Beginners is the most watched sporting event on Earth. Every four years, the best national teams from around the world compete for the title of world champion. The 2026 tournament features 48 countries playing 104 total games from June 11 to July 19.
The last winner was Argentina in 2022. Before that, France won in 2018.
HOW SOCCER WORKS (QUICK BASICS)
Two teams of 11 players play for 90 minutes total. The team that scores more goals wins. If tied after 90 minutes in the group stage, the result stands as a draw. If tied in the knockout stage, 30 minutes of extra time is played. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides the winner.
A penalty shootout has five rounds. Each team takes one kick per round. Whoever scores more penalties after five rounds wins. If still tied, it goes one kick at a time until one team scores and the other does not.
Players are shown yellow cards for bad fouls. Two yellows equal a red. A red card means that player is out for the rest of the game and the team plays with 10 players.
THE GROUP STAGE EXPLAINED
48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4. Each team plays the other 3 teams in their group. The top 2 from each group advance. The 8 best third-place teams also advance. That gives 32 teams a spot in the knockout rounds.
WHAT IS THE KNOCKOUT STAGE
After the group stage, it is one game at a time. Lose and you go home. Win and you move on. This starts with the new Round of 32 on June 28 and continues through to the Final on July 19.
WHICH TEAMS SHOULD A NEW AMERICAN FAN WATCH
Start with the USA. They play on home soil in Los Angeles and Seattle. Their opener against Paraguay on June 12 at 9:00 PM ET on FOX is a great first game to watch.

Argentina vs. Algeria: June 16 at 9:00 PM ET. Defending champions in action.
France vs. Senegal: June 16 at 3:00 PM ET. A classic rematch.
England vs. Croatia: June 17 at 4:00 PM ET. A famous rivalry.
HOW TO WATCH

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MATCH
Watch the goalkeeper for big saves. Watch for set pieces like free kicks and corners that create goal opportunities. Watch how the two teams manage possession. The team with the ball more is usually controlling the game.
A good goal has buildup play. Multiple passes through tight spaces. A run behind the defense. A finish into the corner of the net. When that happens live in a stadium at the World Cup, the sound and emotion is extraordinary.
HOW LONG IS A MATCH
90 minutes plus stoppage time, which is typically 3 to 10 minutes per half. A standard match takes about 2 hours from kickoff to final whistle including the halftime break.
